In 1859, the French romantic composer Charles Gounod composed this melody superimposed over J.S. Bach's Prelude No.1 in C major, of the Well-Tempered Clavier.  It is often performed at Christian wedding ceremonies.  


I love its plaintive pleas, leading to the climax and the soft amen.
