My Philosophy of Teaching Voice
Every voice and every singer is unique, so voice lessons should be tailored to your needs. However, there are principles that apply to everyone, and when you understand how your voice works, you can be more free -- free to make the music you want to make, and do it easily and without straining.
In order to sing well, it is important to learn the correct techniques for positioning the larynx, focusing the sound, supporting the sound, pronouncing words, and so on. It is also important to enjoy your learning and your singing! A voice is a very personal thing. Feeling good about yourself helps you to open yourself up, use your voice correctly, and give yourself to your music and your audience.
I teach the techniques used by Caruso; the modified Melocchi technique which involves lowering the larynx, producing clear ringing tones. We work from the bottom up, learning to support the sound from below. This creates stability, and prevents strain and wobble. We build a scale which is even from bottom to top, with no separation of registers. These techniques are safe and healthful, expanding the singer's range, correcting pitch, and increasing resonance.
We will work together to develop a repertoire of music that you enjoy and can sing well, choosing from opera, musical theater, jazz and classical songs.
While we are doing all this, we will have a lot of fun!
